    Grid Connection for Solar in Latvia: The Process, the Timeline and the Traps

    Construction Is the Easy Part

    A 300 kWp rooftop takes three to five weeks to build. Getting it legally connected and producing can take three to nine months. Planning around that reality is what separates a project that lands on schedule from one that sits finished and switched off.

    Step 1: Know Your Existing Connection

    Before anything else, find your connection capacity and voltage level on your grid operator contract. Your inverter output cannot exceed the permitted generation capacity without a connection change - and a change at medium voltage means a new agreement, not a form.

    Step 2: Technical Application

    Submit a technical connection request for the generating installation. It requires the planned capacity, inverter data, the site plan and the protection concept. The operator responds with technical conditions specifying metering, protection settings, and any reinforcement you must pay for.

    Step 3: Design to the Conditions

    The detailed design - single-line diagram, protection coordination, anti-islanding settings, metering arrangement - must match the issued conditions exactly. Deviating here is the most common cause of a failed commissioning inspection.

    Step 4: Build, Then Documentation

    Construction is followed by the documentation package: as-built drawings, equipment certificates, test protocols for insulation and earthing, inverter compliance certificates for the national grid code, and the electrical installation acceptance.

    Step 5: Metering, Registration, Net Settlement

    The operator installs or reconfigures the bidirectional meter. Only after registration - and after choosing your settlement model with your electricity trader - does the system legally begin producing against your bill.

    The Five Traps

  1. Applying after you have designed.: The technical conditions can change your inverter selection. Apply first.
  2. Ignoring the transformer.: An existing transformer may be loaded to its limit; backfeed can require an upgrade you did not budget.
  3. Mismatched inverter certificates.: Inverters must carry valid compliance certificates for the applicable grid code. Cheap parallel imports often do not.
  4. Skipping the protection study.: For medium-voltage sites, the protection coordination study is mandatory and takes weeks.
  5. Assuming export is automatic.: Export rights and settlement are a commercial arrangement with your trader, separate from the technical connection.
  6. Who Should Do It

    Any competent EPC contractor should handle the entire process on your behalf and name a fixed contact. If a quote excludes permitting and documentation, that is not a cheaper offer - it is an incomplete one.
